Here's something you can do to help us win, why it works, and how you can participate
Action: Writing postcards to register voters
Why it works:
Personalized messages on handwritten cards come across as more warm and trustworthy than direct-mail political appeals. So they make folks feel more valued, and more likely to respond to the message, especially if it includes a simple call to action ("Make your voice heard! Register to vote."). One study showed that providing helpful info about how and when to register boosted voter turnout by 0.4 percent -- a small but significant increase, equal to or better than a door-to-door effort. More targeted postcard campaigns can boost turnout by around 2 percent.
How you can help:
You can join our D2 Neighbors crew, who write postcards every Thursday from 3 p.m. - 4 p.m. at Concordia New Seasons Cafe. Our team provides postcards from Progressive Turnout Project, pens, and stamps, but you’re always welcome to bring your own materials if you’re working on a specific campaign.
You could also check out Indivisible Oregon’s postcard efforts. They provide everything you'll need: postcards, voter addresses, suggested texts, and instructions. They'll also provide stamps if you can't provide them yourself. Postcard-writing can be a fun roundtable event with like-minded folks at the sessions listed below -- and it's even better if you can bring along friends! If you'd rather write and mail postcards at home when you can fit it in, drop by one of the sessions to pick up supplies. If you'd rather contribute money instead of, or in addition to time, your donation will help fund supplies and postage. Anything you can contribute will help our effort, and help us win critical races in November! (And that includes telling friends and family who might also want to participate.)
Other Postcard Writing Options
Plan your own postcard-writing parties at home or write postcards in your spare time with national organizations! Here are some of our favorites:
Progressive Turnout Project offers two programs -- The News Boosting program and The Get Out the Vote for Nov. 4. The Progressive Turnout Project sends you postcards, but you have to commit to a minimum of 100 at a time, and they have very specific messages to use.
Postcards to Voters is great option for working specifically on campaigns. They organize handwritten reminders to targeted voters, giving Dems a winning edge in close, key races across the country. They support special elections, so there are often smaller races to support throughout the year.
Activate America offers both postcard writing and phonebanking campaigns.
