We’ve decided that a book we first encountered almost a year ago deserves deeper study. This is an Uprising analyzes “the craft and strategy behind modern nonviolent social movements,” using recent examples to highlight the use of “strategic disruption and mass mobilization to achieve transformative change.” We think that 15 months in, District 2 Neighbors Indivisible is in a better position to learn from and implement its strategic and practical recommendations to maximize our collective impact.

We’ll likely be spending the summer delving into this book and its companion Resistance Guide. For the May meeting, please read the Introduction and Chapters 1 & 2 of This is an Uprising.

Readings:

  • Engler & Engler, This Is an Uprising: How Nonviolent Revolt Is Shaping the Twenty-First Century. (If possible, the latest edition, revised in Feb. 2026.)

  • Engler & Lasoff, Resistance Guide. This short handbook takes the lessons from This is an Uprising and distills them into a practical guide for activists.

  • This is an Uprising Reading Group Guide.
